I admit, I quit reading Spider-Man after the Mephisto fiasco. But I have been a Spidey fan for more years than I care to admit. For the start of the new year, I decided to try the new Spidey and see how it is doing.
The first issue of the year is the second part of a story featuring the Molten Man, his sister Liz and her husband Harry. I was surprised. Dan Slott has done a good job of capturing the personalities of the various characters. Harry tries to make up for his past mistakes. Liz is doing what she can to protect her family. Spidey helps everyone. Although I don't agree with how they had Peter make a deal with Mephisto, the current book does a good job of capturing the flavor of classic Spidey.
McKone does a great job with everything he draws. The final page was drawn by Klaus Janson. I have not seen much of his work in recent years. I hope they recruit him to draw one of the future stories.
Recommended. I will be picking up future issues to see if the rotating team can continue this quality.

Nice review. Like you I stop reading Spider-Man because of the Mephisto thing but I picked up a couple Amazing Spider-Man isssue and thought they were all right and now I only check out the occasional Spider-Man issue and from your review I might have to check this issue out.
And if you liked this issue you should pick up Amazing Spider-Man 578-579. It's a two part story by Mark Waid and Marcos Martin involving Shocker. Martin's artwork alone is enough for any Spider-Man to get those two-part story.

Um, but I picked up most of the Anti-Venom arc, too. Guess its easy to fall off the wagon. "New Ways to Die" was alright and I don't regret getting it. But I did not like it enough for me to start collecting Spidey again on a regular basis.
Yes, pick up the Waid/Martin 2-parter and also the one-shot featuring the Punisher, my favorite Spidey comic of last year.
Say what you want about the series' content, but I don't see how anyone could deny this: there hasn't been a bad cover since BND kicked off.
